Spring Migration at Rondeau Provincial Park, Long Point Provincial Park, and Pelee Island
May 1 - 22, 2023 May is the most wonderful time of the year! Spring birding along the north shore of Lake Erie is world-renowned, and the first three weeks of May is the peak migration window for many species. In 2023, I will be leading a number of day trips at several select hotspots including Long Point and area, Rondeau Provincial Park, and Pelee Island. I am also available for private tours on some of the days |
Breeding Birds of Carden Alvar
June 10 and 11, 2023 Located an hour and a half north of Toronto, the Carden Alvar is truly a birding paradise. The locally rare alvar habitat is home to many unique plant species, along with a wide diversity of birds. The most famous resident at Carden is the Endangered Loggerhead Shrike, but many other species can be found such as Upland Sandpiper, Clay-colored Sparrow, Common Nighthawk, Golden-winged Warbler and Brown Thrasher. Certain wetlands are home to Least Bitterns and Sedge Wrens, while over 20 warbler species breed in the diverse forests of the area. It is possible to see over 100 bird species in a day of birding here. The butterfly and dragonfly diversity is off the charts as well! |
Mothing in North Dumfries, Waterloo Region
To be determined My latest obsession has been the study of moths. Over 3300 species (and counting!) are known from Ontario, and the diversity of their shapes and colouration will blow you away! North Dumfries in Waterloo Region is home to a wide diversity of species and I have discovered several excellent locations to set up my lights and sheets. This summer I will be running several Moth Nights, where we will head out to one of my favourite locations in North Dumfries Township and I will set up several special lights and white sheets to attract moths and other insects. Keep an eye on this space and I will have more details soon. |
